In fact, Serra Park has long been considered one of the best parks in Silicon Valley and the Peninsula. Opened in 1963, (I was at the Grand Opening), it has since grown to over 13 acres. The old “Lester’s Field,” was converted to add a parking lot, two tennis courts, multiple picnic areas and lots of rolling grass.

When the park opened, Serra elementary school was in its infancy, which of course, was a natural fit. Parents knew where their kids were 7 days a week. The adjoining school grounds also have ballparks and basketball courts.

Serra Park amenities include many recirculating ponds and streams, play areas, spray pool, lighted tennis courts, a skating rink, parcourse, multi-use fields, and picnic areas with restrooms.

Two generations of our family have enjoyed this wonderful park, I’m sure the third will, too.

nice article Pat. It makes for some great memories. Too bad they tore up the boat and ruined the best game of tag on the planet.
Regards to your family for me.
Hey Pat!
Great article, it sure has changed over the years. I’m sure we have some old pictures of the park somewhere. I remember when we could swim in the ‘pond’ and they had lifeguards! How about the carnivals and mini golf course by Lester’s Market where the Safeway is now. Many great memories of SSLL, your dad was the best umpire by far!
Take care,
Gary
Hey Gary,
Your Dad was a great coach, too!
Pat
Thank you for the wonderful article that brought back childhood memories for me. I went to Serra School and remembered when the park was being built. Recess was always very exciting cause we would stand in the play-yard and watch the park construction. My CampFire Girls meetings were held in the recreation room. At one time my grandparents lived in the apartments across the street….so I had the best of both worlds….endless supply of candy AND Serra Park!! I also remember falling into the creek just about every 3rd time I would go to the park. Agree with Dave–too bad the boat was torn apart…..running around on that was TOO MUCH FUN!!!
