Before you start remodeling, talk to your neighbors. Take your contractor along to answer their questions and address their concerns. You should hire a contractor that will be considerate of your neighbors. Your contractor should provide each adjacent neighbor with his business card so that they can call him directly if there is a problem. If a neighbor has a particular concern, take it to heart. For example, if they have a baby that naps between 1:00 and 2:00 in the afternoon, ask your contractor if there is any way to lower the noise level during that time period. Even if you can’t do so every day, often just making an effort will be appreciated and may cause the neighbor to overlook other problems that might occur. It will do you no good to ultimately have the house of your dreams only to be ostracized by the people around you.
