Let your architect know your budget at the beginning. He will then discuss your priorities with you so that he can design accordingly. It is a good idea to get a contractor involved early in the design phase to give a periodic reality check on your budget. You do not want to spend a fortune on finish plans only to discover that the cost is way over your budget. This does not mean that you must hire that particular contractor to remodel the house. You can pay him by the hour for his services. Once the plans are complete, he can bid on them along with other contractors.
