Lee Middleman

In my ceramic forms, I seek to create shapes that reflect the curves
found in Nature and patterns and textures that emphasize the organic
interplay between order and randomness.

Highly Textured

The tactile feel and visual look of surface textures are essential to my
pieces. My recent work is focused on creating textures by deeply
impressing patterns into thrown cylinders without distorting the overall
shape. The cylinder is then expanded from only the inside to create the
final form. This technique allows the pattern to evolve as the clay
twists and expands. As the pattern adjusts to the shape and function
of the vessel, it becomes reflective of Nature’s adaptation to the form -
as the size and shape of a reptile’s scales gradually vary along its body

Hand Built Stoneware

For high-fire pieces, the glazing process enhances the natural aesthetic
of the order and randomness. Thinly glazed surfaces highlight the
macropatterns and reveal the stoneware clay’s micro-texture created
during the expansion process.

Wood Fire:

This body of work is created and fired in wood kilns in Japan, Korea,
and China. It is for exhibition and sale in these countries only.
Simple textures and surfaces are used to compliment the fire effects.

Wood Fired

“For wood fired pieces, the firing process enhances the
natural aesthetic of the order and randomness.”

Wood Fired

My goal is to pursue the interplay of shape, surface texture, ordered
patterns, and random effects so that work is created that intrigues
the eye and demands to be touched.

Exhibiting Member – Clay

What can I say? I like working with clay. In the Joseph Campbell world, I have found my bliss. There are so many things to explore with clay–texture, color, form. And I have fun with all of them. I find much of my inspiration in the natural world. Rocks, plant life and sea life all give me ideas to build upon when I work with clay. Currently I’m exploring the figurative world–distantly based on the human figure, but not very anatomiclly correct. I’m trying to capture movement and expression in the figures and infuse them with a little humor at the same time. I like to laugh, eh.

Exhibiting Member – Clay

My work is an abstract expression of the urban/human condition. Pathway and structure are elements that play a significant role in my development of ideas and are portrayed in non-representational, linear ways. Whether executed as a three-dimensional form or as markings on a flat surface, my concern is for the line itself and how it relates to the surrounding space. I am devoted to the task of making objects from clay and feel that the clay itself is an important component of my work. It’s fitting that, since our constructed environments are made from clay, my work should be also.

Artist Statement:
I came across glass quite by accident and what a joyous lifelong relationship we have had. I am always exploring new ways to challenge the nature of glass. Its characteristics are so clear, untouched, fragile yet strong. It is in my nature to take this material as far as it can go. How strong is it? How strong am I? Can I cut the glass deeper? Will it shatter, will the design remain or just melt away? These are the questions that I welcome and enjoy answering for myself.
